Martin Luther King Jr. Day: DRIVE-UP Food Drive

“I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day…” When Dr. King delivered his Nobel Prize acceptance speech in 1964, he shared his vision for society. A vision that is focused on equality, education, culture and nutrition for everyone, everywhere. Here at the Center, we uphold Dr. King’s values and here’s your chance to make an impact by doing the same. On Monday January 17, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., the Center will have a coned-off area for you to drive up and drop off food donations. What’s that? You plan on donating but don’t know where to start? We’ve got you covered, here’s some items that the Food Pantry is in need of: Pasta sauces (tomato products) Canned soups Canned proteins Pantry staples (flour, sugar, spices, cooking oils, etc…) Household goods, toiletries Nutritional supplement drinks (Ensure, Boost, etc…)

Hoot-hoot: The Audubon Society of RI brings a sanctuary owl to Lunch and Learn

The Audubon Society of Rhode Island stopped by the MLK on Wednesday to teach our seniors of Lunch and Learn about birds…and that’s not even the best part! The Audubon Society brought in its 13-year-old barred owl to hang out with us for a little. There’s a lot to learn about being a “birder” and our seniors absolutely loved the informative, interactive presentation that was prepared for us by the Audubon Society. To check out the full album of photos (trust me, it’s really cool) just click this link to the MLK Facebook page here.

FOOD PANTRY FEATURE: Warmth and comfort items for those in need

Winter in New England is tough enough on all of us, but you know who it’s even tougher on?

The people in our community battling housing insecurity.

The MLK is kindly asking for your help in stocking coats, gloves, socks, handwarmers and other items to keep those in need around Newport County warm and safe this winter.

Please note: We can accept new coats and gently used (and clean) winter coats. Socks and gloves must be new.

We’ve already seen our temperatures drop below freeing and it’s only the first week in January.

Donate these items to the MLK and help us keep Newport County warm TODAY.

The food pantry accepts donations from Monday –– Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at the Loading Dock.
